Description
Cenchrus (Pennisetum) alopecuroides ‘Red Head’ is a warm-season ornamental fountain grass prized for its unusually large, smoky dark red to pink-red bottlebrush plumes, which appear earlier than many other fountain grass selections and rise above graceful arching green foliage that turns golden-yellow in fall and buff in winter. It forms a dense clump with a bold yet elegant fountain habit, making it especially effective as an accent, in mass plantings, borders, meadow-style designs, and containers. Sources describe it as an early-blooming selection with especially showy flowerheads, and horticultural references note it was selected by Brent Horvath of Intrinsic Perennial Gardens; additional trade references indicate it has been associated with introduction through Plant Haven. It has also received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
