Description
Salix chaenomeloides ‘Black Cat’, commonly known as Black Cat Pussy Willow, is a striking ornamental shrub prized for its early spring display of soft, silvery catkins that emerge before the foliage, creating a visually captivating contrast. Native to East Asia, including regions of Korea and Japan, this species has been cultivated for its adaptability and ornamental value in temperate landscapes. Unique among pussy willows, ‘Black Cat’ is noted for its particularly dark, nearly black stems, which provide year-round visual interest even after the catkins fade. The plant thrives in moist, well-drained soils and is tolerant of wet conditions, making it an excellent choice for riparian plantings or garden areas that experience periodic flooding. It typically grows as a multi-stemmed shrub or small tree, reaching heights of 10 to 15 feet, and is valued for its fast growth and ease of maintenance. As part of the Proven Winners collection, ‘Black Cat’ has been recognized for its consistent performance, ornamental appeal, and unique stem coloration among Salix cultivars. This combination of early-season flowering, distinctive dark stems, and adaptability has made ‘Black Cat’ a favored choice for gardeners seeking both texture and seasonal interest in their landscape designs.
