Description
Vaccinium x Southern Bluebelle, marketed under the Bushel & Berry brand, is a hybrid blueberry variety developed to offer gardeners a compact, ornamental shrub with high fruit production, making it ideal for home gardens and container planting. This southern highbush blueberry hybrid combines the cold hardiness and flavor profiles of northern highbush varieties with the adaptability and disease resistance of southern highbush types, resulting in a versatile plant suited for a wider range of climates, particularly in the southeastern United States. Notably, Southern Bluebelle produces large, flavorful berries with a rich blue color that are excellent for fresh eating, baking, and freezing. The plant features attractive, glossy foliage that turns shades of red and purple in the fall, adding seasonal interest beyond fruiting. Developed through careful breeding programs to improve yield, fruit quality, and plant vigor, Southern Bluebelle reflects advancements in blueberry cultivation aimed at expanding blueberry growing regions and extending harvest periods. This variety has been recognized for its consistent performance and exceptional fruit quality, contributing to the growing popularity of blueberries in home landscapes and edible gardens.
