Description
Pieris japonica ‘Enchanted Forest Cabernet Gay Goblin’, commonly known as Japanese Andromeda, is a striking evergreen shrub prized for its compact form, rich burgundy new foliage, and cascading clusters of bell-shaped white flowers that bloom in early spring. This cultivar is uniquely valued for its vibrant young leaves that emerge deep red to wine-colored, gradually maturing to glossy dark green, adding multi-seasonal interest to gardens. Native to eastern Asia, Pieris japonica has long been admired in traditional Asian landscapes and has been cultivated extensively in Western gardens for its year-round ornamental appeal and adaptability to woodland and acid soil conditions. ‘Enchanted Forest Cabernet Gay Goblin’ is particularly favored for smaller landscapes and containers due to its dwarf habit and strong contrasting foliage colors. The species is also noted for attracting early pollinators such as bees, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. Its combination of evergreen structure, colorful foliage, and delicate floral displays distinguishes it from other landscape shrubs, with proven performance in USDA zones 5 through 8.
