Description
Crataegus phaenopyrum, commonly known as Washington Hawthorn, is a resilient and ornamental deciduous tree native to the eastern United States, prized for its attractive, dense form and striking four-season interest. This hawthorn species features glossy dark green leaves that turn vibrant shades of red and orange in the fall, followed by clusters of showy white flowers in late spring, which attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Its bright red berries persist into winter, providing essential food for birds and wildlife. Washington Hawthorn is valued not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its adaptability to urban environments, tolerating a range of soil types and pollution. Historically, it has been a popular choice in landscape design for street and specimen planting due to its moderate size and resistance to common pests and diseases relative to other hawthorns. This species has garnered attention for its dependable performance and ornamental value in North American gardens and public spaces.
