Description
Picea abies ‘Columnaris’, commonly known as the Columnar Norway Spruce, is a striking evergreen conifer valued for its distinctly narrow, upright growth habit that adds vertical interest to landscapes. Originating from the species native to Northern Europe, particularly Norway, Picea abies has a rich history as a staple tree in traditional European forestry and ornamental gardening. The ‘Columnaris’ cultivar is prized for its dense, dark green needles and strong central leader, creating a tight, column-like form that makes it an excellent choice for formal gardens, privacy screens, and windbreaks. Its adaptability to a range of soil types and cold hardiness down to USDA zones 3-7 ensures reliable performance in temperate climates. This cultivar’s elegant form combined with its resilience and ease of maintenance has made it a sought-after variety among landscapers and gardeners aiming for architectural appeal in their planting design.
