Description
Dicentra spectabilis ‘Cupid’ Bleeding Heart is a charming perennial known for its distinctive heart-shaped, pink and white flowers that elegantly dangle from arching, reddish stems in spring to early summer. This cultivar is appreciated for its compact growth habit, making it ideal for smaller garden spaces or container planting, unlike its larger traditional counterparts. Originating from Asia, particularly Siberia, northern China, Korea, and Japan, Dicentra spectabilis has a rich horticultural history dating back to its introduction in Western gardens in the 19th century, where it quickly became a favorite for shaded garden areas due to its unique flower form and extended bloom period. The ‘Cupid’ variety is celebrated for its exceptional garden performance, combining delicate flower appearance with robust foliage that remains attractive throughout the growing season. Its fern-like leaves add texture and visual interest even after flowering. This cultivar thrives in partial to full shade and prefers well-drained, humus-rich soil, making it a versatile choice for woodland gardens, borders, and shaded landscape areas. Dicentra spectabilis ‘Cupid’ has been recognized by various horticultural societies for its ornamental value, often recommended for adding a touch of elegance and romance to shade gardens.
