Description
Quercus bicolor ‘American Dream’—commonly known as the American Dream Swamp White Oak—is a remarkable cultivar prized for its exceptional disease resistance and vigorous growth habit. This deciduous oak tree is native to the wetlands of the eastern and central United States, thriving naturally in moist, well-drained soils, but ‘American Dream’ adapts well to urban landscapes, tolerating a range of soil conditions including clay and occasional flooding. It features a broad, rounded crown with strikingly bright green, lobed leaves that turn vibrant shades of red, purple, and orange in the fall, providing outstanding seasonal interest. Unlike many oaks, the Swamp White Oak’s undersides of leaves are distinctly lighter—almost silvery—a trait that inspired its species name, bicolor. ‘American Dream’ is particularly noted for its resistance to common oak ailments such as powdery mildew and leaf spot diseases, making it a preferred choice for sustainable urban forestry and landscape projects. Developed through selective breeding programs to enhance these characteristics, it has gained recognition among landscape professionals for its combination of beauty, hardiness, and environmental adaptability.
