Description
Asclepias speciosa, commonly known as Showy Milkweed, is a striking perennial native to western North America, valued for its large, fragrant clusters of pink to mauve flowers that bloom from late spring to midsummer. This species is an important ecological plant, serving as a vital nectar source for butterflies, especially monarchs, whose caterpillars feed exclusively on milkweeds. Showy Milkweed features broad, velvety leaves with a silvery-green hue that add texture and interest to naturalistic and pollinator-friendly gardens. Known for its drought tolerance and adaptability to various soil types, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, making it a versatile choice for prairie restorations and wildlife gardens. Historically, indigenous peoples utilized parts of the plant for medicinal purposes and fiber. Recognized for its ecological benefits, Asclepias speciosa continues to be promoted in conservation efforts to support declining monarch butterfly populations.
