Description
Catalpa speciosa, commonly known as Northern Catalpa, is a large deciduous tree native to the Midwestern United States, renowned for its striking heart-shaped leaves and showy clusters of trumpet-shaped white flowers adorned with purple and yellow markings. This fast-growing species can reach heights of up to 60 feet, offering dense shade with its broad, spreading canopy. Its distinctive, long, slender seed pods, which resemble beans, persist through winter, adding ornamental interest year-round. Historically valued by Native Americans for its strong, lightweight wood used in crafting fishing rods and fence posts, Northern Catalpa is also appreciated in landscapes for its tolerance to urban pollution, adaptability to a variety of soil types, and resistance to drought once established. The tree supports pollinators, especially hummingbirds and large moths, due to its nectar-rich flowers. Its unique combination of aesthetic appeal and ecological benefits has made Catalpa speciosa a favored choice in public parks and large gardens.
