A grass-like herb of the onion family. Flat tube-like tops which are cut as needed have a mild flavor midway between garlic and onion. Used for flavoring salads, soups, stews and stir-fry.
SOWINGPlant seed outdoors as soon as the ground can be worked. Plant seed in rows 12 inches apart, spacing seed 1 inch apart in the row. Cover seed withinch of fine soil, well pressed down. Keep soil moist until plants start to grow.
THINNINGWhen plants are 2 to 3 inches tall, thin or transplant 4 inches apart in the row.
GERMINATIONGerminates in 10 to 15 days depending on soil and weather conditions.
REMARKSWhen plants are 5-10 inches tall, cut outer leaves near ground with scissors. Use fresh or freeze for later use. When in bloom, the flowers are of a glorious white and are very decorative in a border.
