Lavender should be grown in every home garden for ornamental and border effect. Commonly used for scenting purposes, it is also an edible herb as both the flowers and leaves can be used both fresh and dried for flavoring.
SOWINGCan be sown as early in the spring as ground can be worked in a sunny, well drained, well limed soil. Plant seedsinch deep and cover with fine soil well pressed down.
THINNINGThin to 10-12 inches apart when plants are 2 inches high.
GERMINATIONGerminates in 10 to 20 days depending on soil and weather conditions.
REMARKSTo dry flowers for later use, cut stems on a dry day just before buds are fully open. Place in a cool shed or room. Place flower spikes on frames of stretched cheesecloth or netting for air circulation. When dry, remove flowers from stems and seal in wide mouth bottles.
