Description
Ilex × crenata ‘Ruby Colonnade’ is an evergreen holly cultivar prized for its elegant, columnar growth habit and dense, finely textured foliage. A hybrid derived from Japanese holly (Ilex crenata), this variety offers a refined alternative to traditional boxwoods, making it especially popular for formal hedges, foundation plantings, and narrow spaces where vertical accentuation is desired. The small, glossy, dark green leaves are tightly packed along upright stems, creating a visually striking and low-maintenance screen or architectural element in the landscape. ‘Ruby Colonnade’ is valued for its adaptability to various soil types, tolerance to pruning, and resistance to common holly pests and diseases, contributing to its reliable performance in USDA Hardiness Zones 5 through 8. This cultivar’s history stems from breeders’ efforts to combine the attractive features of Ilex crenata with improved form and vigor, resulting in a standout plant noted for its versatility and year-round interest. Its distinctive upright form and fine foliage texture have earned it recognition among landscape professionals and garden enthusiasts alike.
