Description
Nyssa sylvatica ‘Gum Drop’, commonly known as Gum Drop Tupelo, is a distinctive cultivar of the Black Tupelo tree celebrated for its compact, pyramidal growth habit and vibrant seasonal foliage. Native to eastern North America, Nyssa sylvatica has been valued historically for its adaptability to a variety of soil types, exceptional tolerance to wet conditions, and its role in supporting wildlife, particularly as a food source for birds and pollinators through its nectar-rich flowers and dark blue fruit. The ‘Gum Drop’ cultivar is uniquely suited for urban and residential landscapes due to its smaller mature size—typically reaching 20 to 30 feet tall—making it an excellent choice for limited space gardens or street tree plantings. This variety exhibits brilliant fall color, ranging from fiery reds and oranges to a striking golden yellow, contributing to dynamic seasonal interest. Its dense canopy and glossy, dark green leaves also provide aesthetic year-round appeal. The cultivar has been recognized by landscape professionals and garden enthusiasts for combining the ecological benefits of the species with a manageable stature, enhancing its popularity in sustainable landscape designs.
