Description
Pellionia repens, commonly known as Trailing Watermelon Begonia, is a charming and distinctive groundcover or trailing plant prized for its vibrant, watermelon-like patterned leaves. Native to Southeast Asia, this tropical perennial belongs to the Urticaceae family and is renowned for its striking foliage—oval to ovate leaves marked with contrasting silver or pale green veins against a deep green to reddish background, often tinged with purplish hues. Its creeping growth habit makes it an excellent choice for hanging baskets, terrariums, or as a lush groundcover in shaded garden areas. Although it is related to begonias by common name, Pellionia repens is botanically distinct and appreciated primarily for its ornamental foliage rather than its flowers, which are small and inconspicuous. The plant thrives in warm, humid environments with indirect light and consistently moist soil, reflecting its tropical origins. Its unique leaf patterning and trailing habit have made it a popular choice among indoor plant enthusiasts and tropical garden designers.
