Description
Prunus × cistena, commonly known as Darkstar Purple Leaf Sand Cherry, is a striking deciduous shrub valued for its vibrant deep purple foliage that adds dramatic color contrast in landscapes. This hybrid originated from a cross between Prunus pumila (Sand Cherry) and Prunus cerasifera (Cherry Plum), combining the hardiness and adaptability of sand cherries with the ornamental qualities of cherry plums. Darkstar is prized for its compact, rounded form reaching about 6 to 8 feet in height, making it an excellent choice for hedges, borders, and foundation plantings. In spring, it produces delicate, fragrant pink to white flowers that attract pollinators, followed by small, dark fruit favored by birds. The foliage maintains its intense purple hue throughout the growing season, often intensifying in cooler weather, providing extended visual interest. Its tolerance to a range of soils and conditions, including drought once established, makes it a versatile and low-maintenance choice for gardeners. The Darkstar variety has been recognized for its outstanding leaf color and garden performance, often highlighted in landscape plant trials for its unique ornamental value.
