Description
Helleborus x hybridus ‘Kingston Cardinal’, commonly known as Lenten Rose, is a striking perennial prized for its early spring blooms that bring vibrant color to shade gardens when few other plants are flowering. This hybrid hellebore features large, deep crimson to cardinal-red flowers with a subtly nodding habit, providing a dramatic contrast against its leathery, dark green, evergreen foliage. Originating from crosses among various Helleborus species in Europe during the 19th century, the ‘Kingston Cardinal’ cultivar is valued for its robust growth, extended bloom period, and adaptability to woodland and shaded border settings. Its tolerance to deer and rabbits, coupled with its preference for well-drained, humus-rich soils, makes it a low-maintenance yet visually impactful choice. Notably, Lenten Roses like ‘Kingston Cardinal’ have been celebrated by horticultural societies for their early flowering and shade tolerance, making them a beloved addition to temperate gardens.
